The youngest of Prague’s islands is Slovanský, which formed over 200 years ago due to river deposits brought by the flood of 1784. Its foundation was reinforced with a stone wall and trees, resulting in a wonderful park beloved by both residents and visitors of the city. In my view, tourists love Slovanský Island in Prague is much more than Střelecký and Dětský islands for its preserved landmarks.

Slovanský Island in Prague: A Hidden Gem Steeped in History
Slavonic Island (Slovanský ostrov) is relatively small in size, covering just 2.2 hectares. Its length spans only 350 meters—a stroll from one end to the other takes about half an hour.
If you decide to relax in its park area, go for a catamaran ride or spend time with your children at the playground, the time spent on the island can stretch for 2-3 hours. Let me tell you about its sites.
Žofín Palace in Prague
The magnificent Žofín Palace is a true gem of Slovanský Island. Originally a restaurant that later transformed into a two-story structure where balls were held, it became a concert hall famous throughout the republic and was named after the mother of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1840.
She is known as Sophie of Bavaria or Sisi, but in Czech, her name sounds like Žofie. The palace certainly decorates Slovanský Island and sets it apart from other Prague islands.
Šítkovská Water Tower in Prague
The first building to appear in the 16th century was the 47-meter-high Šítkovská Tower, whose purpose was to supply water to city fountains.
There is also the Manes Art Gallery inside the tower, which displays contemporary artists’ paintings, Czech glass sculptures, and photographs.
The public prevented the demolition of the Šítkovská Water Tower, which was in poor condition, and today it is included in the World Heritage list. Is has a distinctive feature — a tilt, similar to its “sister-tower” in Pisa.
Park and Recreation Area
First and foremost, Prague’s islands are a haven for local residents to relax. Slovanský Island is no exception, with much of its area devoted to green lawns, comfortable benches and blooming flower beds.
As you stroll along the pathways, you’ll come across a statue of a woman holding a book. This is Božena Němcová, the pioneer of modern Czech prose, renowned for her enchanting fairy tales, many of which were originally told by her grandmother. Before our trip, I read these fairy tales to my son Mike to spark his interest in the city where these stories unfold and where the fairy tale characters reside.
Playgrounds on Slovanský Island
But what trip with children is complete without playgrounds? Ours never are, how about yours? There are two playgrounds on Slavonic Island. One behind Žofín Palace and another near the water tower. It’s wonderful to walk through the park with the whole family, and kids can enjoy playing on the well-equipped playgrounds and sliding down the slides.
The only downside is that the playground is right next to an unfenced embankment. The kids were playing football, and the ball often threatened to roll into the river. The boys would chase after it without thinking, risking a headfirst plunge into the water. The depth around the island is quite significant. This setup made me a bit uneasy. So, I had to keep a close eye on my kids and stay extra vigilant.
Renting Pedal Boats Prague River
On the northern edge of the island, you’ll find a pier. By using the boat station’s services, you can enjoy the scenic views from the water. During the summer, this becomes a favorite activity for families. There plenty of pedalos are available on the Vltava River!
Here are the rental prices for pedal boats in Prague for 1 hour:
- 300 CZK – Standard pedal boat for 4 person.
- 500 CZK – Pedal boat for 5 person.
- 250 CZK – Rowboat for 4 person.
- 500 CZK – Large pedal boat for 6 person.
👉 Payment is cash only. Additionally, a form of identification is required as a deposit, so make sure to bring a passport (at least one person if you’re renting as a family or group). They accepted my driver’s license, noting that it is also a valid ID.
