To be honest, Pattaya’s beaches aren’t nearly as bad for a family vacation as people often make them sound. Sure, they’re not postcard-perfect. But the sea stays warm all year, the infrastructure is convenient, and the atmosphere feels relaxed and welcoming. After spending so much time here with Mike, we discovered that every beach has its own personality. Some are great for swimming, others for long walks, and some simply make family life easier.

How I Chose the Best Family Beaches in Pattaya

When putting this guide together, I looked at much more than just the sand and the sea. These were my main criteria:

1. Wongamat Beach: The Best All-Rounder

If I had to recommend just one beach for a first family trip to Pattaya, Wongamat would be very high on the list.

The beach stretches for almost 1.5 kilometers, so even on busy days it rarely feels overcrowded. Families have everything they need within easy reach: comfortable hotels, restaurants, cafés, convenience stores, playgrounds, and even designated swimming areas where children can enjoy the water more safely.

Mike couldn’t stop splashing in the warm sea. Moments like this remind me why Wongamat is one of our favorite family beaches in Pattaya.

Another reason we like Wongamat so much is its location. It’s only about five to seven minutes from central Pattaya by songthaew, the city’s inexpensive shared taxi. Yet despite being so close to downtown, the Naklua neighborhood feels noticeably quieter, greener, and much more relaxed.

2. Cosy Beach: A Quiet Family Escape

Cosy Beach hides between green hills and feels like a little escape from Pattaya’s busy streets. The sea is usually calm, the water stays shallow near the shore, and the whole bay has a peaceful, laid-back feel. Since most visitors stay in the nearby hotels, the beach rarely gets too chaotic.

Small, peaceful, and surrounded by hotels, Cosy Beach feels more like a hidden bay than a city beach.

Overall, Cosy Beach is a great choice if you want a quieter beach without staying too far from the city. Central Pattaya is only about 10–12 minutes away by songthaew. Just keep in mind that you’ll need a short walk (or a quick motorbike taxi ride) to reach the main road.

3. Sangwan Beach (Koh Larn): Clear Water & Snorkeling

If your kids love looking for fish underwater, Sangwan Beach might become their favorite place near Pattaya. The water is crystal clear, soft white sand stretches along the shore, and colorful little fish swim around the rocks. Bring snorkel masks if you have them, you’ll definitely use them here.

Actually, many beaches on Koh Larn look quite similar. But whenever we visit the island with Mike, we almost always choose Sangwan. The reason is simple. You can easily walk here from Tawaen ferry pier, so there’s no need to spend extra time riding across the island in the tropical heat.

One short walk from the ferry, and you’re already heading toward one of Koh Larn’s prettiest family beaches.

Most visitors head straight to nearby Tawaen Beach instead, which leaves Sangwan feeling much quieter and more relaxed.

Nearby attractions for kids: Most of the fun on Koh Larn happens in the sea. Families can go snorkeling, ride banana boats, or try other water activities. The moment Mike spotted fish through his snorkel mask, getting him out of the water became almost impossible.

In my opinion, Koh Larn works best as a one- or two-night family getaway. After that, many families start missing the restaurants, playgrounds, and convenience of Pattaya. The good news? 4. Dongtan Beach: The Easiest Beach Day

Dongtan Beach sits in the peaceful Pratumnak area and blends almost seamlessly into Jomtien Beach. Together, they create one long stretch of coastline, so even on busy days you can usually find a quiet spot if you don’t mind walking a little farther.

Early mornings are my favorite time here, when Dongtan feels peaceful and almost empty.

The sea isn’t the clearest in Pattaya, but that’s not why families come here. Dongtan makes beach days easy. You’ll find playgrounds, sports areas, water activities, cafés, restaurants, and plenty of street food just a few steps from the sand. At the same time, the atmosphere stays surprisingly relaxed.

Dongtan isn’t just about swimming. Playgrounds, sports, cafés, and beach activities keep families busy all day.

It may not be Pattaya’s prettiest beach, but it’s definitely one of the easiest places to spend a full family day.

Dongtan isn’t Pattaya’s most beautiful beach, but it’s one of the easiest for families. Everything you might need is close by, which makes spending a full day here simple and stress-free.

5. Ban Amphur Beach: Peaceful Seaside Escape

If Pattaya ever feels a little too busy, Ban Amphur offers a completely different pace. The beach sits well south of the city, and public transport doesn’t come this far. Because of that, very few tourists make the trip. Add the small number of nearby hotels, and you’ll often find long stretches of sand almost completely empty.

One of my favorite things here is the seaside promenade lined with palm trees. Families can relax in shaded gazebos, enjoy simple beachfront cafés, or let the kids burn off some energy at the playground with swings and slides.

A swing by the sea is sometimes all it takes to make a child happy. Mike could have stayed here much longer than we did.

The water is usually calm and clean. However, it gets deep quite quickly, so I think it’s better suited to older children than toddlers.

Palm trees, shaded paths, and almost no crowds. Ban Amphur offers a very different side of Pattaya.

Nearby attractions for kids: Columbia Pictures Aquaverse (formerly Cartoon Network Amazone), Pattaya Dolphinarium, and Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, where children can even feed elephants.

If your perfect beach day means fewer people and more sea views, Ban Amphur is hard to beat.

Ban Amphur is perfect if your idea of a holiday means slow mornings, uncrowded beaches, and plenty of time by the sea. Most families spend the day swimming, relaxing, and only head into Pattaya when they feel like sightseeing.

Hotels in Pattaya with a Private Beach

If you prefer a quieter side of Pattaya, a hotel with its own beach can make a huge difference. You get more space, fewer crowds, and that lovely feeling that you’ve escaped the busy city for a while, even though everything is still within easy reach.

Pattaya doesn’t have many truly private beaches, but several hotels offer direct access to quiet stretches of sand that feel much more peaceful than the city’s public beaches.

During the rainy season, especially around September, jellyfish sometimes drift closer to shore. Most are harmless, although some can leave an itchy sting or mild skin irritation. Serious encounters are very rare, but I still recommend paying attention to local beach notices before swimming. It only takes a minute and gives extra peace of mind.

Murky water

If you visit during the rainy season, don’t expect the sea to look like those bright turquoise photos on Instagram. Heavy rain washes sand, algae, and sediment into the water, so the sea often turns cloudy.

Honestly, that’s completely normal. You’ll see the same thing on many beaches across Thailand, even on famous islands. After a storm, nature simply needs a little time to settle down again.

Oil stains and litter

Every now and then, you might spot a small oil sheen floating on the water. Pattaya has busy boat traffic, fishing boats, and ferries, so it happens from time to time. After storms or on busy holiday weekends, you may also notice a little plastic or natural debris washed onto the beach.

Thankfully, local cleaning crews work hard to keep the beaches tidy, and they do a pretty good job. Besides, this isn’t just a Pattaya problem. Sadly, it’s something many popular seaside destinations around the world deal with.

Even after busy weekends or rough weather, Pattaya’s beaches are regularly cleaned and quickly return to normal.

Waves and Currents

The sea usually stays calm during the dry season. However, once the monsoon arrives, stronger waves and underwater currents can appear, especially after heavy rain.
Whenever conditions become unsafe, local authorities put up warning flags and signs. If you see them, don’t ignore them. The sea isn’t going anywhere, and it’s always better to come back another day.

Sand fleas

To be honest, we’ve never come across sand fleas anywhere in Pattaya, and I hope it stays that way. Still, I mention them because some travelers report getting bitten from time to time. These tiny insects live in the sand, and their bites can itch for days.

The good news is that they don’t permanently live on any particular beach. Whether you encounter them often comes down to luck, the weather, and the season. So while I wouldn’t worry too much about them, it’s still useful to know they exist.

Low tide

Like everywhere else in Thailand, Pattaya has tides. They aren’t dramatic, but at low tide the water can retreat quite far, leaving a long stretch of very shallow sea. That’s great for little kids who enjoy splashing around, but not so great if you’re hoping for a proper swim.

Luckily, checking the tide takes just a few seconds. A weather app can save you from arriving at the beach at exactly the wrong time.

One Last Thing

If you’ve read this far, you might think Pattaya’s beaches sound full of problems. But honestly, that wasn’t our experience at all.

Most of the things I mentioned happen mainly during the rainy season or only once in a while. We spent months living in Pattaya with our son, and beach days became one of our favorite family routines.
