We had a few days for walks around Prague. Some of these days were spent on children’s attractions. My kids were incredibly happy about this because they were tired of following their mum around the streets. Prague is very beautiful, but the kids appreciate other places, so I made an itinerary to visit locations they would enjoy.

About the Aircraft Museum Prague-Kbely
I didn’t want to take my children to usual attractions that can be found in any city. So, before the trip, I spent a long time searching the Internet for a pretty uncommon place to visit. Eventually, I found the Aviation Museum in Prague.
The Kbely Aviation Museum (cz: Letecké muzeum Kbely) covers a large area with an old military airfield, featuring various types of aviation technology. You can spend a long time wandering around. One of the museum’s main attractions is its extensive collection of over 275 aircraft. These range from early biplanes and World War I fighters to modern jets and helicopters.

The children were thrilled to see iconic planes like the Spitfire, MiG-21, and various other military and civilian aircraft up close. The sight of these massive machines is both educational and awe-inspiring, making it a perfect learning experience wrapped in fun.
Mike loves airplanes.

I expected there to be at least one airplane that children could climb into, press buttons, and feel like pilots or passengers. Unfortunately, we didn’t find such an option, although the promotional posters showed children climbing on a large plane. But this must had been a special event, not a regular basis.
Anyway, the museum is set in a large, open space, which makes it ideal for families. Kids can run around and explore without feeling confined. Picnic areas are available, so visitors can bring their own food and enjoy a meal surrounded by historic aircraft. The outdoor nature of the exhibits means there’s plenty of fresh air and space to move around, adding to the overall enjoyable experience.

The Kbely Aviation Museum was established in 1968 at the site of the country’s first military airbase, built right after the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918. The original World War I hangars still stand today, now housing exhibit halls with fascinating early aircraft that look almost like toys.

For those interested in history, the museum offers detailed insights into the development of aviation in Czechoslovakia and the world. The exhibits include rare photographs, uniforms, and other artifacts that tell the stories of pilots and their missions.

This historical perspective is valuable for both kids and adults, providing a deeper understanding of the technological advancements and the brave individuals who made them possible.

It’s amazing that the setting of the time is recreated here. You see a wealthy person arriving at the airfield in a fancy car, a soldier loading a plane with ammunition, and scenes of early engineers and radio operators at work. There’s also a modern, bright hangar filled with planes from up to the 1990s.

In addition, the museum frequently hosts special events and activities, such as model airplane shows and educational workshops, which particularly appeal to young aviation enthusiasts.
It’s great that visiting the Kbely Aviation Museum is completely free! You can only spend money at the museum café and the charming souvenir shop. I bought there a high-quality toy plane and a nice pilot’s badge for my son =)
